Only a few decades ago, if you wanted to live with someone else as a couple, the only acceptable by society way to do that, was through the bonds of marriage. Otherwise youd risk being alienated because you would be viewed as a shameless person. Those times are over. Nowadays, it shocks no one when couples live together for years, even have children, without marriage. It is no longer a cause for social stigma to live with your other half like that. What is more, it is quite common for famous people, such as movie and TV-series actors, pop-, and rock-music stars, football players or even many politicians, to marry and divorce again and again, thus making meaningless the part of the marriage vows about not dividing what God has joined. Not to mention radical feminist who claim that the marriage is a tool of womans enslavement in the hand of men.
Does that mean that marriage is a dead institution in todays world?
I dont think it is a case. While it is true that more and more children are born outside the bonds of marriage, even when the institution of marriage is deemed obsolete, there are still many people, who believe that marriage is something special, worth being a part of and worth being preserved. Those are the people who vow to restrain themselves from sexual intercourse before marriage, who believe that is only right to raise children within the bonds of marriage. They still believe that the words of the marriage oaths should be upheld regardless of situations people find themselves in. They believe that the marriage is a gift from God, that should not be thrown away like a piece of junk, not more needed.
Also, it should be remembered that in many countries of the world especially those in southern hemisphere, marriage is still the only proper way for a couple to live together.
To sum this up, I believe that news of the death of a marriage as an institution are definitely untrue.
